After 3rd Year of your engineering you can apply to IIT- Internships from February on wards registrations are started. You can google & search for various department professors working around.

2. Prepare cover letter to mail respective faculty/mentor: demo
3. Prepare decent proposal of your project.
4. Always, include online links of all the documents because your mail- attachments can be rejected to spam.
5. Don't expect reply from all faculties, have patience & keep the work positive.
I am Vishal Aditya currently doing B.TECH(CSE) from Amity University Rajasthan. I was selected at IIIT Hyderabad vlabs & IIT Jodhpur UGRI 2016 and currently working for IITJ-CSE Department- Automation Project of AIIMS Jodhpur. I followed above methods but worked beyond academics also my current CGPA for 5th SEM is 6.93 only.
For getting projects in IIT's you should have quality project & proposal of the same interest as your faculty/mentor. This, increases greater chance of approval.
